How To Celebrate Labor Day While Social Distancing
Because the situation surrounding COVID-19 is constantly evolving, some information may not be up to date. Stay informed by following information from your local officials and by visiting the CDC website.
When you think about Labor Day, you probably imagine barbecues with neighbors gathering in a backyard, pool parties with friends, and block parties. However, as COVID-19 continues to be a major health concern, these activities can pose a serious risk to you and your family’s health. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t celebrate Labor Day, though! Instead, try out some of our COVID-19-friendly celebrations.
Family Field Day
Enjoy the summer sun with a family field day competition — just don’t forget the sunscreen! Choose a variety of fun activities to do with members of your household, and compete to see who will be the Labor Day Champion. Some games to consider include:
- Water Balloon Toss
- Hula Hooping Contest
- Tug-of-War
- Three-Legged Race
- Limbo
Drive-In Movie
While sitting in a regular movie theater can increase your risk of catching COVID-19, attending a drive-in movie with members of your household can be a fun way to get out of the house. The Drive-In at Sawyer Yards is a great option for people in central Houston, while The Showboat Drive-In Theater is convenient for those in Northwest Houston. Load up your car with blankets, pillows, and healthy snacks for the ultimate movie-watching experience.
Board Game Tournament
If being out in the heat doesn’t sound like fun, consider holding a board game tournament with your family. Grab some of your favorite games, cook up some nutritious and delicious snacks, and spend the day rolling the dice.
Picnic
Whether it’s in your backyard or at a local park, having a picnic is a great way to get some fresh air and spend time with your family. If you do go to a park, bring masks and hand sanitizer, and set up your picnic blanket far away from any other visitors.
No matter how you’re spending Labor Day weekend, celebrate safely. Remember to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds – wash the “webs” between your fingers and thumbs – and if you can’t get to a sink with soap, use hand sanitizer. This simple action can help continue to slow the spread of COVID-19.
